Rehab Joy is a single-room sports therapy clinic on Kingsway, founded and run by sports therapist Yan Liu. It treats athletes, gym-goers and desk workers with the same approach: find the cause, treat it with your hands, and give the person something to do about it between sessions.
Most clients call her Joy, and the clinic is named after her for that reason. She holds an MSc in Sport Rehabilitation and Soft Tissue Therapy from Middlesex University, and opened Rehab Joy at 113 Kingsway to work the way she thought rehabilitation should be delivered: one client at a time, in a private room, with enough of the hour left over to teach the exercises properly.
Her caseload runs from badminton and football injuries through to the neck and shoulder problems that come from long hours at a desk. A typical case involves hands-on release, joint mobilisation and instrument work to change how the tissue moves, then a graded exercise plan so the change holds once you go back to loading it.
She has since added spinal manipulation, instrument-assisted soft tissue technique, acupuncture, dry needling, electrotherapy and manual lymphatic drainage to that base, along with pre-hospital immediate care for pitch-side work. Consultations run in English and Mandarin.
Pain often shows up somewhere other than the problem. A tight calf can be an ankle that stopped moving; a sore shoulder can be a mid-back that never rotates. Assessment comes first so the hands-on work lands where it matters.
Manual therapy creates a window where the tissue moves better. Exercise is what keeps it open. Every client leaves with two or three specific things to do, and the next session starts by checking how they went.
Tendons take months. Muscle strains take weeks. We say which one you have and roughly how long it will take, so you can plan your training around it rather than guessing session by session.
Joy treats the majority of the clinic's caseload. Mo works alongside her for cases that call for a physiotherapy assessment, a formal diagnosis or medical acupuncture.
